The Peter Moore Cup January 6 1940 – Moorefield Racecourse, Kogarah

Harry, my King Charles Cavalier Spaniel – Standing in front of the Peter Moore Cup, January 6 1940 commemorative board.

I was alerted,   in early April 2020, to this item being for sale on e-bay.  A  Stanwell Tops man, who had it is his possession, had   found it possibly 20 years ago.  It was on a pile of items somewhere  in the  St George  area, that were to be collected for a Council  clean up.

He kept it until recently, when he decided that he should sell it –in the hope of finding the right owner.   His family members had been bookmakers, and I believe that he said that his father was a penciller at Moorefield Racecourse. This is why he kept it. I am very grateful that he did keep it.

It is a wonderful visual history of the  January 6 1940 race day. You can see the houses in Marshall Street, Kogarah; a lovely photo of jockey Darby Munro returning to scale; the horses on the turn and the race finish. Mr C. Battye, the winning owner is being presented with a   large cabinet of cutlery.

The winning horse is Sedunum 6 years 9st 10lbs (Ridden by Darby Munro), 2nd The Squire and the 3rd Marengo.

Time 1 minute 42 seconds.
